How to use insurance in countries within the Schengen Area

2025-08-06 17:41
If you have taken out complex medical insurance in Czech Republic for a long-term visa or temporary residence, as a rule, it is can also cover medical care on the territory of countries within the Schengen area. In the event of an emergency outside of Czech Republic, first and foremost you need to contact the assistance service of your insurance provider (pVZP, UNIQA, Maxima, Slavia, Ergo (SV pojišťovna a.s), AXA Assistance or Colonnade pojišťovna). The phone number of this assistance service is always indicated on your insurance card, which must be with you at all times.

The assistance operator will then direct you to the nearest medical facility contracted by your insurance provider. If there is no such facility in the nearby area, you can go to any available hospital and receive medical care as a self-payer. You will need to keep the doctor’s notes and receipts to request compensation either through the insurance agent or the insurance company directly (depending on your insurance provider).
